Generate composite SKU from selected options

We need to compile and display a composite order code on the product page and ideally in the cart and checkout.

For example, if the product SKU is 1234, Element #1 selected is AA and Element #2 selected is BB then the composite SKU would be 1234/AA/BB

One suggestion would be to pull the option SKU from the lookup table using the row below the prices.

The other option would be to implement a feature similar to Gravity Wiz's Item Meta Display, using the value of the element (rather than the text in the dropdown); i.e. the dropdown items show "AA - Black", "BB - Brown" but the values stored are AA and BB. They have a video here.
